Happy Holidays!

With Santa at the Grove

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! I survived 5 days with the girls on a trip to Chicago by myself, I wasn’t sure I could do it. Thankfully my mom cooked the entire time, with the exception of the sweet potatoes which I think I have down now. She had homemade kimchi ready for me and I think I consumed an entire Napa cabbage by the time the week was over. I love Thanksgiving! I must have changed nearly 100 diapers and I became “that mom” on the plane ride back. I miss my parents and hometown but it was nice to come back to 80 degree weather.

The holidays are a busy time in the office, so if you are thinking of coming in, it is best to call early as I will not be in the office between Xmas and New Years. Then again, if you are planning for anything with downtime (lasers, biopsies, surgeries, freezings) or you are traveling, you might want to put it off until January.

Quite possibly the most useful tip thus far

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

It has been a slow time for dermatology news, so my blog is getting more random. Much more fun than skin cancer statistics though!

Know anyone with a BMW or Mercedes? Then warn them that when they replace a tire they should either replace it with the exact same tire or be prepared for problems. I had a flat tire a couple months ago. I decided to replace both back tires with a different brand of tire from the front. Although they are supposedly the same size, the minute difference is picked up by the car’s computer on fast sharp turns. This leads to the 4×4 light going off and a jerking of the car (because it thinks you are spinning out). Amazingly many advisors at BMW and Mercedes are not very educated about this problem. It took two advisors, two days of my time, and now $1000 worth of tires (from one being changed to all four).

The Big Easy

“Never shall I forget the days I spent with you. Continue to be my friend, as I will always be yours.” Beethoven

“It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Had a great trip down to one of my favorite places, New Orleans. My good friend Jessica had a beautiful wedding and brought together my best friends from middle school and high school.

My old friends and I are basically sisters. They are loving, generous, intelligent, fun and fiercely loyal. The past is a big blur of happiness and without them I really don’t know how I would have turned out and how I’d cope today. We survived the awkward, geeky years (of course now being a geek is cool!) together with lots of laughter. We have seen one another through a myriad of boyfriends, school/career stress, health crises, etc. Not only did they take care of me, but I owe a lot to their parents who were always kind to me and treated me like family. My dad asked in junior high if I wanted to move to another school district to go to what was the pinnacle of HS’s in Chicago, New Trier. I made a fateful decision not to go and to stay at Stevenson. I always know that no matter how bad things can get I have people I can count on, if only they lived here in LA! We are all over the country now which is really hard for me!

The weekend was full of music, dancing, eating and reminiscing. I also had the pleasure of catching up with some other old classmates and discussing funny things like who was on our bus route, who bullied me and the tribulations of being in junior high when preppiness was all the rage. Feathered hair, designer jeans, Papagallo bags, Fair Isle and Ralph Lauren-it was bad enough I was a new kid in town! It was really timely that I read “Prep” by Curtis Sittenfeld this week. It was one of the best books I’ve ever read and I could really relate to the character. It reminded me more of college than high school, but was all about teen angst and how to overcome insecurities.

I also survived my first trip away from my girls. I had never left them for more than a day in their entire lives. Nice to come home to hugs and “I love you, Mom!”
