Storage Wars!

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

“Yuuuuuuuuuuup!” I have a funny addiction to the TV show Storage Wars. I really cannot explain it other than the characters are amusing and it is fun to see trash turn into treasure.

This old album of my dad’s is an example of the great things that can be reused. I am sure it is scratched up, but I couldn’t throw it away because the artwork is just so beautiful! I am going to frame it. I miss the old days of albums! I cannot part with some of them because they bring back memories or they are just works of art. I just can’t give away Shaun Cassidy or Leif Garrett. It is just so weird to think that kids these days have nothing tangible to possess when it comes to music or even books!

The coolest thing that happened when I cleaned out my stuff from my parents’ house is coming across an old K-Tel album from the ’70’s which belonged to my brother. I remember listening to it and liking it. One of my patients, who is a famous composer, was also a singer at one point and I was stunned when I saw his name on the cover amongst Elton John and the various artists. Funnily enough, I contacted his wife who is also my patient and saved it for them. They had no knowledge of the existence of this album.

The only problem with saving too much stuff is to risk being the next showcase on Hoarders!

The Ultimate Compliment

Friday, August 24th, 2012

Thanks again to my doctor peers for putting me on the Los Angeles Magazine Super Doctors list for 6 years in a row. Respect from my peers is the ultimate compliment next to respect from my patients.

Runner up compliment from my derm peers: that I am “young and hot.” Yeah, I looked especially hot yesterday morning frantically mopping up my kid’s pee from the floor of the Westside Pavillion food court with six diapers! We got some interesting looks from various people, my fave being the blank stare of the woman behind the McDonalds counter. I couldn’t find a custodian and all I could think of was a slip and fall by peepee traumatic brain injury. Where are those “Cuidado” signs when you need them?

Runner up compliment from a patient, “You’re too pretty to be a doctor.” I forgot to ask her what should have been my calling? News anchor? KPop sensation? Really, what? And can I call her when I have a bad day? My S.O. doesn’t even say anything remotely this flattering!

But seriously, after taking off several 3 inch wide cancers just this week, and working very, very hard, things like this make my day. Malcolm Gladwell said that it takes 10,000 hours to master something. Dr. Bennett calculated that a Mohs surgeon working several days a week would take about 12 years. That makes me a master. A Mohs surgeon working once a week or once a month, well, go figure! But no one can really be a master without being a perpetual student and keeping humble so now I will sign off.

Even fish get skin cancer

Saturday, August 4th, 2012

There was an interesting story in the LA Times about Australian trout that get melanomas. Also, there is a new free app called UMskincheck which was developed at the Univ of Michigan to follow moles. I haven’t checked it out yet, but it should be interesting. Whether or not it would change biopsy rates is yet to be seen. I have biopsied moles that look scary and they’re completely benign and others that are tiny, but dark, and found melanomas or near melanomas. It is important to get a regular screening and get to know your own moles and growths to watch for changes.
