Citrus and Melanoma

Saturday, August 29th, 2015

Recently there was a mention of a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology which linked consumption of citrus with incidence of melanoma. Strangely, there was only a correlation with consumption of orange or grapefruit juice, not the fruit.

Studies like this just mean there is an association, not a causation. For instance, maybe if you looked at whether the participants owned a Kindle or not, perhaps some correlation would have been found. Does this mean the Kindle causes melanoma? No. Just probably a coincidence.

Frankly, I’m surprised this study was published. In the meantime, I think it’s safe to drink your juice. I’m more concerned about the link between Vitamin D supplementation and memory problems. I think it’s best to just get your level checked periodically and supplement periodically if needed. In the meantime, eat your dairy, fatty fish such as salmon, eel, tuna and sardines (in moderation), an egg yolk here or there, portobello mushrooms or fortified cereal.

This is 6!

Saturday, August 8th, 2015

My twin girls had their 6th birthday party recently. I didn’t plan on having a party, since last year the python around the neck at our house was a bit over the top, but at the last minute a get together with a few friends became much larger. Duff’s CakeMix is a great place to go to decorate cakes or cupcakes with friends or family. It is really fun and they are delicious. I highly recommend them for your cakes as well, we used them for the girls’ Lego and Frozen cakes last year and everyone was blown away not only by how they looked but how good they tasted.

Everyone had a good time. We had an interesting run in with a makeup-free but still beautiful A-list celebrity who thought I was someone she knew for a split-second. Her adorable daughter joined in with the girls playing Ring Around the Rosie. My kids have seen the mom’s iconic movie but couldn’t quite grasp that the little girl in the movie now was a mom herself. So cute! It was so fun. I’m afraid these parties just are too fun to give up!
