We had a great office holiday party at La Cachette in Santa Monica last weekend. The first party I planned was 11 years ago at the original location in Century City. How time flies! I loved the oysters and that Pomerol definitely has legs!
Also, Rest in Peace to Marvin Saul, the owner of Junior’s Deli. We had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time several months ago. He was sweet and let my girls have some free sprinkle cookies. They have practically grown up in that place. We have been served by every waiter and waitress there. It was neat to read about his background in the LA Times- a true American success story. My dad walked (yes, walked in LA, who does that?) half a mile for the lox sandwich there.

Sorry for the inconvenience of rescheduling. My loyal and reliable lab tech got called in for jury duty and just our luck he was selected (with the current rate of unemployment, couldn’t they have picked someone else?). He didn’t take my advice and bring Guns and Ammo magazine with him-a tip I got from my late co-resident Bill Carey. Bill was quite a character. I still picture him leaning at 20 degrees forward (he was always on the go), short sleeve buttondown, tie and briefcase (who carries a briefcase in their 20’s?). Totally politically incorrect, only ate meat and “pah-tay-tas” and really funny. He annoyed and intimidated me a bit when I first met him, but he really was a good guy. He introduced me to the internet and email way back when and drove me all the way out to NJ from NYC to Best Buy to buy my computer. I hope he is proud of me now blogging away. Anyhoo, I digress. It is going to be a little busier than normal on certain days due to the overflow but hopefully we will make it look seamless (my jogging in between rooms seems to help).
Hope to see some of you out Xmas/Hanukkah shopping. I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my patients call out my name in the Century City parking lot yesterday. Just look for the frazzled Asian mom with two moppets in tow!

The holidays are a busy time in the office, so if you are thinking of coming in, it is best to call early as I will not be in the office between Xmas and New Years. Then again, if you are planning for anything with downtime (lasers, biopsies, surgeries, freezings) or you are traveling, you might want to put it off until January.

It has been a slow time for dermatology news, so my blog is getting more random. Much more fun than skin cancer statistics though!
Know anyone with a BMW or Mercedes? Then warn them that when they replace a tire they should either replace it with the exact same tire or be prepared for problems. I had a flat tire a couple months ago. I decided to replace both back tires with a different brand of tire from the front. Although they are supposedly the same size, the minute difference is picked up by the car’s computer on fast sharp turns. This leads to the 4×4 light going off and a jerking of the car (because it thinks you are spinning out). Amazingly many advisors at BMW and Mercedes are not very educated about this problem. It took two advisors, two days of my time, and now $1000 worth of tires (from one being changed to all four).

“Never shall I forget the days I spent with you. Continue to be my friend, as I will always be yours.” Beethoven
“It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Had a great trip down to one of my favorite places, New Orleans. My good friend Jessica had a beautiful wedding and brought together my best friends from middle school and high school.
My old friends and I are basically sisters. They are loving, generous, intelligent, fun and fiercely loyal. The past is a big blur of happiness and without them I really don’t know how I would have turned out and how I’d cope today. We survived the awkward, geeky years (of course now being a geek is cool!) together with lots of laughter. We have seen one another through a myriad of boyfriends, school/career stress, health crises, etc. Not only did they take care of me, but I owe a lot to their parents who were always kind to me and treated me like family. My dad asked in junior high if I wanted to move to another school district to go to what was the pinnacle of HS’s in Chicago, New Trier. I made a fateful decision not to go and to stay at Stevenson. Thank god! I always know that no matter how bad things can get I have people I can count on, if only they lived here in LA! We are all over the country now which is really hard for me!
The weekend was full of music, dancing, eating and reminiscing. I also had the pleasure of catching up with some other old classmates and discussing funny things like who was on our bus route, who bullied me and the tribulations of being in junior high when preppiness was all the rage. Feathered hair, designer jeans, Papagallo bags, Fair Isle and Ralph Lauren-it was bad enough I was a new kid in town! It was really timely that I read “Prep” by Curtis Sittenfeld this week. It was one of the best books I’ve ever read and I could really relate to the character. It reminded me more of college than high school, but was all about teen angst and how to overcome insecurities.
I also survived my first trip away from my girls. I had never left them for more than a day in their entire lives. Nice to come home to hugs and “I love you, Mom!”

There has been a lot of new data on skin cancer lately.
-There is a link between melanoma and breast cancer
-Women who drink 3 cups of coffee a day may lower their risk of basal cell carcinoma by 20%. Sorry, men, only 9% for you.
-After just 4 tanning bed visits, the risk of basal and squamous cell carcinoma increases by 15% and of melanoma by 11%. The younger the patient is, the higher the risk of basal cell carcinoma
-Melanoma rates have increased for women under 50 for Caucasians, Asians and Hispanics
-Melanoma remains the #1 cancer in white women from the ages of 25 to 29 and #2 for women 15 to 30 years old
It is not common knowledge that non-white people can get skin cancers. Some of the worst basal cell cancers I have seen are in Hispanics and Asians. The two worst nose cases I’ve seen lately were in two Korean people in their 60’s to 70’s.
I would not be surprised if I get a basal cell carcinoma one day considering that my friends and I spent a lot of time frying in the sun trying to tan ourselves and swimming at the Swim Club! I remember my blonde friend turning as red as a lobster, and I was disappointed that I just couldn’t tan. Baby oil, Hawaiian Tropic and Coppertone SPF 4-we used it to try to get tan, not to protect ourselves! I escaped the signs of sun damage until I moved to San Diego in the late 90’s. Too much outdoor fun on the weekends led to a lot of freckling. I wish I knew then what I know now.

Thanks to my friend Jack who took this awesome photo and for being my date last Tuesday! This photo doesn’t do justice to the incredible concert we experienced. Journey and Foreigner-then confetti spraying at us and an amazing fireworks show above our heads. It was quite amusing to see grandmas walking with their canes to the show, I felt like a little kid who shouldn’t have been let in!
I also posted a video of my girls chasing bubbles. Although I look like I need a coffee, makeover and a shower, I could watch little giggling Lydia all day.

It was sad to hear that TV presenter Giuliana Rancic contracted breast cancer, most likely with a contribution from hormones used during IVF. Although I don’t watch her show, I am familiar with her story of the struggle to get pregnant, IVF, miscarriages, etc. She reminds us all, even at a young age, to get a mammogram. I must say I am guilty myself even though one of my best friends is a survivor at 42. Made my appointment today. Reality TV is good for something!

Gov. Brown has signed into law a ban against indoor tanning for minors under 18. Previously indoor tanning was allowed for minors between 14 and 17 with parental consent. Indoor tanning has clearly been linked to a higher incidence of melanoma.
