Sorry for the absence!

Monday, November 3rd, 2014

Sorry for not posting a blog for months. It started with my girls’ bday party planning, and somewhere it morphed into the elementary school search.

A lot of you have been asking when Verdure sunscreen will be available again. We are really sure it will be March/April 2015. Thanks for your patience.

I hope you will enjoy getting to know my new assistants Rosa and Tracy. Once again, I have made the USC and UCLA crowds happy.

Mistakenly, I was omitted by Pasadena Magazine as a Top Doctor in Dermatology this year when the issue was published. Their editors were notified of this error. Once again, you will see my name in Los Angeles magazine as a SuperDoctor this January. Thanks again to my colleagues who have bestowed Dr. Bennett and me with this honor.

A friendly reminder that I will be out of the office as usual Thanksgiving week and between Xmas and New Years. Cosmetic treatments and appointments are very popular around this time of year so plan accordingly. The Mohs surgery schedule is also filling up, so if you decide to postpone your surgery until after the holidays (not recommended for SCC or melanoma), please make careful note of the exact location of your biopsy site and take multiple pictures with your cell phone or ask your referring dermatologist to take a picture and consider a diagram.

So inspired!!

Saturday, October 5th, 2013

Does it seem like I’m gone once a month? Yes, that seems to be my pattern lately. This time I am in Chicago checking in on my elderly parents and attending our annual derm surgery meeting. It has been intense and fun. I have reconnected with old friends, old colleagues, and have been excited to meet new people that I have learned so much from. On top of that, this group has a sense of humor and have shown off their musical and performing talents.

Besides learning about and reinforcing advanced filler techniques and devices, we got to hear the famous Duke Coach Mike Kryzyzewski speak to us. He’s the only basketball coach I recognize besides Phil Jackson and Pat Riley (that is a big deal) We got to hear about his own insecure crush on Beyonce, but more importantly we got to learn about what qualities he looks for in young people and how he passionately motivates all of the big egos he deals with through a culture of respect. I didn’t realize he is a nice Polish boy from Chicago on top of that!

I found out that the lasers I possess are still the gold standard, despite the continual alphabet soup of new technology. I am still eager to try some new devices on myself first and see for myself what the truth is. The truth is harder to figure out at these meetings, as the lines between industry and medicine are blurred and the truth will only be told with time. You wouldn’t believe how many of the latest “hot” lasers-no pun intended- have come and gone in my career. Nonetheless, I learned a bunch and look forward to returning to LA. I miss my patients, my dog and my girlies!

Belotero and Xeomin

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

There are 2 new products on the block. Belotero is another hyalaronic acid filler and Xeomin is another version of Botox. If you read my previous posts, I tend to be a late adopter. However, these products are very similar to Restylane and Botox, respectively, but slightly less expensive. Therefore, I am passing the savings on to you, the patients. So far, so good. I flew through a bunch of Belotero in the pasr month, everyone is happy. Longevity remains to be seen, the jury is still out.

Hope everyone is enjoying the June gloom. I absolutely love the cooler, more overcast weather! Beating hot sun is not my idea of fun! Please note that during the first half of July, I will be out of the office quite a bit, so please plan accordingly.

Score!

IMG_1864

Hope everyone had a nice Xmas break. The blog page was corrupted for a while, so I couldn’t post anything until now. My kids enjoyed Xmas thoroughly. I think they got a little too much, considering I think I got them more in one year than I got in all Christmas’s combined. I will tell them the sad story of how mom only got one present a year from her parents and I never did get that Barbie head that you could do makeup and hair on. The above video is really amusing (IMG_1864). I call it Pulp Fiction meets Gangnam Style. Mom gets credit for the Pulp Fiction. Nanny’s friend for Gangnam Style training. Hope you enjoy it!

I spent the long holiday break cramming in lots of doctor visits and procedures. I had the pleasure of setting up the fractionated CO2 laser for Dr. Bennett and letting him “Fraxel” my face. I learned the lesson that it really does pay off to leave the numbing cream on for the full hour! My skin is really fresh and glowing and tightened up (no more jiggle!). You can see for yourself when you see me! I also had my wisdom teeth yanked, and wow, the lower one was tough. I got something called dry socket, and it is as unpleasant as it sounds.

Every time I get Botox or local anesthesia, I get to experience the pain of what my patients experience. As much as I cut on people all day and try to be gentle, it is good to be reminded how sensitive I can be to all that pain as well. I hope that just gives me a more gentle touch!

It has been a sad week though. Sad to hear about the passing of Huell Howser and Conrad Bain. I had the pleasure of meeting both of them. They were both true gentlemen, as nice in person as they seemed on TV. Mr. Bain was especially nice considering a crazed fan (ummm…that would be me) accosted him. He is a rockstar in my book. Watching those NBC shows was a true comfort in my childhood. Ironically, I’ve been lucky enough to take care of some of those people. Doubly ironic that Lydia is wearing her “Watchoo talkin’ about Willis?” T-shirt!

Brotox

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Apparently Dr. Oz had a segment about Bro-tox (men who get Botox). It is a popular procedure for men in business and the entertainment industry. While Botox is not a complicated procedure, because men require a larger dose of Botox, it is important that you choose a doctor who understands how to properly inject Botox and tailor treatment to your specific wrinkles, skin type and face. The biggest complications a male patient can have is having too much Botox put in, which can cause heavy brows and a frozen look, or improperly placed Botox which can feminize the eyes

New tips on Botox, Restylane, Juvederm

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

I returned from the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery which was held in my hometown, Chicago. The weather was great, despite the reputation, and I am more in love with my city every time I go. This is a  smaller meeting where one can learn a lot from colleagues and keep up with the latest information on derm surgery.

I learned a lot of new tips of how to avoid problems with Botox, Restylane and Juvederm. Luckily, I am pretty conservative and careful and have managed to rarely have complications, but it is always good to see them and have colleagues who are willing to be upfront and honest about things that can go wrong. I also learned a lot more tips on how to make the most of Restylane and Juvederm to make people look younger. There is a new version of Juvederm available in Europe which looks very promising. I’m not so sure about this fat freezing treatment to get rid of fat. Will report back in a year.

Also, it was fun to see my friends, my parents and see Dr. Bennett get “roasted” as he was inducted as President of the ASDS this year. I was an indirect target of these roasts, but luckily nothing negative (I’ll take people calling me “young and hot” any day). Our musically talented colleagues were really entertaining, such as Tom Rohrer, MD from Boston who did a mean spoof rendition of Cake’s “Short Skirt, Long Jacket” and the

Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah” and  Tim Flynn, MD from NC who could be a Vegas impersonator of Rick James or Jim Belushi if Obamacare does us in.

My girls behaved well on the plane, thank god. These girls are spoiled. All they know are hotel suites so far. Little do they know that dad likes the Red Roof Inn. Mom begs him to upgrade to Hampton Inn to no avail.

Botox got rid of my wrinkles!

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Haven’t had Botox for 4 years. For 4 long years of trying to get pregnant I had to live with my unintentional scowl (the wrinkles between my brows).

Push came to shove when my mom commented on my photo in the new website. “You look lovely except for a few new wrinkles…” Ummm. thanks. I didn’t know what she was talking about until I noticed that my upper eyelids were heavier and bunched up. I also developed some new crow’s feet.

I have a tradition of teaching our surgical fellow the way I do Botox. For the first time, I had my crow’s feet done.

I am happy to report I do look better and it looks really natural. You’ll have to take my word for this until I publish an updated photo…
