ANTI-AGING & ACNE SKIN CARE
WHO IS A CANDIDATE?

Just about everyone is a candidate for anti-aging skin care. Living in Southern California, we are all at risk for sun-damage and premature signs of aging. Not only are there many products to keep our skin in good health, but also, these same products may dramatically improve the appearance of our complexion and prevent acne.

WHAT SKIN PROBLEMS CAN BE IMPROVED?

Fine wrinkles, brown spots, texture abnormalities and dullness can be improved rather easily these days. These same products also help acne-prone skin. Thankfully, we have at our disposal a myriad of topical prescription and non-prescription products which can improve the appearance of the skin within weeks of their use.

WHAT PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE?

Retinoids and New-generation retinoids
Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic Acid)
Hydroquinone 4% (prescription strength)
Combination creams (glycolic & hydroquinone)
Kinerase
Sunscreens

WHAT DO THEY DO?

Retinoids and New-generation retinoids:
    - Improved exfoliation thereby increasing the smoothness, texture, and glow to the skin
    - Prevent acne
    - Normalize atypical changes from sun damage
    - Fade brown spots
    - Improve fine wrinkling

Hydroquinone 4% (prescription strength):
A bleaching agent which also fades brown spots.

Glyquin (ICN Pharmaceuticals):

A rich combination cream of alpha-hydroxy acids, hydroquinone and sunscreen ideal for blotchy areas on the face, arms, legs, and/or chest.

Kinerase lotion or cream (ICN Pharm):
Reportedly uses a natural plant substance to achieve the same as above, but results are not as well substantiated in the literature. Nonetheless, it is a very smooth and well-liked moisturizer.

Sunscreens:
Everyone should incorporate a sunscreen at minimum to their daily beauty routine. Many moisturizers now contain adequate sun protective ingredients at least SPF 15. Chronic sun damage leads to a myriad of skin problems like precancerious growths (actinic keratoses), skin cancers, wrinkles, blotchy brown spots, and texture abnormalities.

WHAT ABOUT RETINOL,CO-ENZYME-q10, GROWN FACTORS and VITAMINS or other ingredients?
Many newer products contain retinol, Co-enzyme Q. or vitamins. A lot of products are introduced each week with the "latest, greatest" ingredients. I usually don't recommend products which don't have a large body of medical literature supporting their efficancy.
CAN I USE THESE PRODUCTS & GO OUT IN THE SUN?
Yes, as long as adequete sun-protection is used. Retinoids and alpha-hydroxys sometimes may make skin more sensitive and easily sunburned.
CAN I WEAR MAKEUP OVER THESE PRODUCTS?
Yes.
CAN MEN USE THESE PRODUCTS ALSO?
Yes.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?
Some people may be sensitive to certain ingredients and may not be able to tolerate some of these products due to redness or irritation. Pregnant women or women considering pregnancy should avoid the use of retinoids.
